My Book About Moving to Mexico
House of Blue Water, Memories of our B&B in Mexico, is about our move from Canada to Mexico, where we ran a B&B in Huatulco, Oaxaca. It is currently available in print or eBook on Amazon
Being downsized from her job gave Brooke the freedom to reinvent herself. Her husband was hesitant at first, but she convinced him that they could live in a tropical setting and run a bed & breakfast. Against everyone’s advice, they sold their home and embarked on a quest for the perfect location. They found paradise in Huatulco Oaxaca.
Having vacationed in Mexico, they thought: What could possibly go wrong? In a word - PLENTY. An arrogant builder nearly turned their dream into a nightmare. Trusting an incompetent doctor almost proved fatal. Conflict over beach access taught Brooke an expensive lesson about power and corruption.
Throughout all of this, Brooke was sustained by the natural beauty of Huatulco, reliable staff and professionals, an eclectic array of B&B guests, and the warmth and generosity of the Mexican people.
Brooke’s narrative depicts locations, cultural aspects, traditions, legends, and the history of a country she has come to love. Her story is about change; adapting to a new career, a different culture, and a slower pace. Change can be terrifying, but taking a calculated risk enriched her life beyond her wildest imagination. She still has a Type A personality, but it is a softer, rounder lower-case a. By being downsized, Brooke says she was handed limones and made margarita.
